Turns out it's an IWE issue. The 4x4 wants to engage for a moment and you get metal on metal. There's a TSB on it. They did the work under warranty and replaced the check valves. Do a search on YouTube under F150 IWE noise and you'll find some surprising similarities lol. The IWE are vacuumed operated, Vacuum holds the gears apart, when you step on the gas or the cruise control, vacuum drops and the gears partly engage, sound like shifting without the clutch..
