AS far as I know the only true place S&W put the serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame. On some models they would also put the serial number on the frame, cylinder, and sometimes on the grips, but varied by model. Sometimes there was really no rhyme nor reason to what S&W did/does.

If they started the numbering at 3001 and they shared these numbers with other Smith & Wesson handguns would this be an early 1957 gun? Any rough estimate of value would be appreciated.
