The link to the video help me a lot but, honestly I didn't use it when I was fitting the MGW as it was referenced for the C5/C6 Corvettes ! ... My C7 Z51 was born December 2013 and does not have the rubber band. I installed the MGW shifter 14 months ago and have had no problems shifting gears.

That is controlled by the transmission. Every shifter for the C5/C6 is nothing but a straight stick that is inserted in a hole that is in the shifter block that gets fastened in the tunnel.
