If your watch had 40 tubes you could pay close to $500 to replace those tubes in today's dollars. In darkness you just look at your watch, and it's there, because the watch saw light sometime during the past 6 hours and was already "charged". The lume lasted a good few hours but the hands much dimmer. Why the FXD doesn't suffer with this is a mystery. The 39 is long gone and I don't miss it at all.
