I’m a former teacher (M.Ed.) and mom of six. I was a balanced literacy advocate for twenty years. As both a classroom teacher and teacher educator, I promoted three-cueing using leveled texts. (I was sure that decodable books would kill a love of reading.) I taught phonics, but I didn’t use a scope and sequence. I’m not big on worksheets, so we didn’t start with them. We began with these fold and read cards. They’re super easy to print and prepare, and they’re a great learning tool for kids to see how short vowel words become new words when you add an e. Another favorite activity is our four in a row games.
