Your wounds can get infected, but it means bacterial infection (which can end up as a fever and can be treated with disinfection and antibiotics) and not Knox Virus infection which ends up only with death.

Once started the zombification progresses on its own, and it is quite often a scratch that got you zombified if fully healed before you start feeling the symptoms. To answer your question, if a wound says "infected" it means a standard mundane wound infection. Don't fret though, this isn't NEO Scavenger or real life.
