Axton is easier to play....by a long shot...but Maya is more fun (she is the most fun for me actually). From her personality (way more playful/funny), to her ability to take many of the bosses/minibosses out of the fight (so much fun to do)...she is a blast.

Both involve almost the same weapons: quasar, grog/rubi, CL, Leg Cat, Fire Sandhawk. The difference is that the slower way will use something like a corrosive pimp to slowly kill the minions, while ...I feel like either anarchy Gaige or grog nozzle +whatever salvador is the best for soloing. 400+ stacks of anarchy is more than enough to kill anything in the game, and the grog nozzle makes Salvador very very hard to kill due to ridiculous health regen. Salvador and Axton are the most "standard shooty"-y characters.

Bee shield is great with Maya! Downside to Pangolin shields is that they make Elated less effective for your companions. Not a concern for a solo run. The other downside is that you don't get full effectiveness from Ward due to the silly shield capacity cap (relaxed in the Pre-Sequel, yay, but that doesn't help Maya).

Beehawking is the easy way to go for her, but I also like to use the lady fist, pimpernel, and dpuh on occasion.
