I wouldn't worry about it too much. I don't think Dark Moon Greatsword is op. It's a fan favorite, and the weapon art is similar to Moonveil (and Moonveil is op/very strong, no questions asked), also it's INT, and the current hivemind seems to be "INT=OP" so that's why I think people claim it to be op. I also don't get that.

Just got the moon greatrsword. +9 for both the Moon Veil and the great sword. Damge wise the Moon Greatsword is stronger. my stats - 45/45 dex int. Useed the stregth trinket to use the greatsword. Wonder if i re spec'd to Strength / int but its still D scale for dex aand strength at +9.
Never too early to use any weapon that is available to you. Just use what you find fun. It's not a question of too early. Really powerful weapons make the game easier. Darkmoon Greatsword is in that category.

Darkmoon greatsword is good if you are doing a frostbite build. If it’s pure dps you are looking for or just getting through the PVE/PVP Moonveil is better. Honestly I think Moonveil should have been locked behind a questline as well it would make more sense as to why it’s so strong

I think the Skill takes a while to cast so it might be hard to find openings to use it on aggressive bosses.The beam is purely magic damage and scales with int. The only melee physical damage of the sword scales with dex and strength. I'd say strength if you want to use big damage chonky weapons like the jaw in addition to the Greatsword, and dex if you use mainly spells. The difference is minimum damage wise. Should definitely go dex for cast speed.
The one handed attacks are good and the weapon art will be more fp efficient than anything else (theoretically at least, if you can hit enemies with the beam). Id also recommend only leveling int to 62 and using the stargazer talisman for rannis darkmoon or the full moon spells cuz they are the only things useful at the 68 int requirement that ...
