Over the available time period it has slightly edged out the vanguard total bond index, it has taken on more credit risk and it did DROP in 2008 where the bond index rose.

FTBFX carries a much higher expense ratio of .45% and is an active fund. FXNAX is at .025% and is an index fund, similar to the vanguard total bond fund VBTLX. given that the active fund is 18 times more expensive than the index, i'd choose the index
